In Elbow’s writing, he is being constantly reminded of the many differences that plague the aspects of the academic and the writer. To begin with, he notices that there is a large foundation of rules and regulations that one must follow if he was an academic. The academic student finds themselves sitting on a large amount of force of rules teachers use. They use these to push students towards a certain position of writing. Where as a writer has the ability to go outside of the rules, to write somewhat to themselves, instead of a teacher who is over bearing with such ‘rules’ or ‘advice’. This gives an opportunity to the writer, giving his written words the power to express, when the academic student needs to be given a prompt, or a guide through their writing.
